# SDD vs. Traditional SDLC

## Introduction

Spec-Driven Development (SDD) is a workflow in which AI coding agents operate from machine-generated Specs derived from the existing codebase, rather than from manually written requirements or documentation. Traditional Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) workflows rely on human-authored artifacts — requirements documents, design specs, and documentation — to convey codebase context to developers and tools.

As AI coding agents become primary contributors to software engineering workflows, the choice of context source for those agents has significant implications for output accuracy, onboarding speed, and documentation overhead.

## When to Use Each

**Use SDD when:**
- AI coding agents are active participants in feature development, refactoring, or code review
- The team needs agents to reason accurately about existing code behavior without manual documentation investment
- Codebase change velocity is high enough that hand-written documentation becomes stale within a sprint
- The team is adopting CoreStory and wants to establish an agent-first workflow

**Use traditional SDLC (without SDD) when:**
- No AI coding agents are involved in development
- The team's documentation practices are mature and rigorously maintained

Teams adopting AI coding agents should adopt SDD for code-level behavioral context. Traditional SDLC artifacts remain valuable for architectural decision records, product requirements (desired future state), stakeholder communication, and compliance documentation.

A practical adoption path: continue authoring requirements and design documents as part of traditional SDLC for human-facing purposes.
