# Persistent Intelligence

> Persistent intelligence refers to the Intelligence Model's ability to retain derived knowledge about a codebase across sessions, agents, and developer context switches — so agents do not start from zero each time a coding task begins.

## Definition

Persistent intelligence is the property of CoreStory's Intelligence Model whereby the knowledge derived from codebase analysis endures beyond a single session or agent invocation. When CoreStory ingests a repository, the resulting Intelligence Model is stored and remains queryable. Any agent or developer that queries the Intelligence Model later retrieves the same derived knowledge without requiring re-analysis.

This property solves a fundamental problem with context windows: AI agent sessions are stateless by default. Each new session begins with no knowledge of prior sessions or the codebase. Persistent intelligence decouples knowledge accumulation (which happens at ingestion time) from knowledge consumption (which happens at inference time). The Intelligence Model is the bridge between those two moments.

Persistent intelligence also means that knowledge accretes over re-ingestions. As the codebase evolves and CoreStory re-ingests, the Intelligence Model is updated — it does not reset. Historical Specs from prior ingestion runs can be retained alongside updated ones, providing a versioned view of how component behavior has changed over time.

## Where It Applies

- Coding sessions where the same agent or different agents need shared, consistent knowledge of the codebase
- Teams where multiple developers use different AI agents but need those agents to reason from the same code context
- Long-running engineering workflows where codebase knowledge must remain available between sprints or across quarters
- Onboarding flows where a new developer or agent needs immediate codebase understanding without manual knowledge transfer

## Where It Does NOT Apply

- Runtime state or session state (persistent intelligence describes code structure and behavior, not application runtime data)
- Real-time or live execution monitoring (the Intelligence Model reflects the last ingested state, not live production behavior)
- Version control history (persistent intelligence is about retained derived knowledge, not raw commit history)
- Agent memory systems (persistent intelligence lives in the Intelligence Model, not in agent-level memory stores)

## Common Misconceptions

## Example

A team uses Claude Code and Cursor in parallel. Developer A uses Claude Code and queries CoreStory's MCP endpoint for the `OrderFulfillmentService` Spec. Developer B, working simultaneously in Cursor, queries the same endpoint for the same Spec. Both agents receive identical, current knowledge derived from the last ingestion — neither agent had to re-analyze the codebase, and neither session is aware of the other. The following week, after a sprint that refactors `OrderFulfillmentService`, the team re-ingests the repository. The updated Spec reflects the new behavior. All subsequent agent sessions query the updated version. The intelligence persisted, then evolved.
